La filosofia di Empedocle è conosciuta per la teoria cosmogonica dei quattro elementi. Empedocle chiama tali elementi radici (ριζώματα, rizòmata), non nate (ἀγένητα, agheneta) ed eternamente uguali (ἠνεκὲς αἰὲν ὁμοῖα, enekes aien omoia), e afferma che sono in tutto quattro, associando ognuno di essi a un particolare dio della mitologia greca, sulla base di concezioni orfiche e misteriche proprie dei riti iniziatici il cui luogo d'origine era la Sicilia. I quattro elementi sono: Acqua (ὕδωρ, Nesti), Aria (αἰθήρ, Hera), Terra (γαῖα, Ade), Fuoco (πῦρ, Zeus). I quattro elementi sono governati, secondo il filosofo siciliano, da due due principi: Amore (Φιλότης), in grado di mescolarli, e Odio (Νεῖκος), responsabile della loro separazione. Pertanto l’esistenza di tutte le cose costituita dall’unione o dalla separazione dei quattro elementi, governati dai principi di Amore e Odio, non si crea ne si distrugge ma è in continua trasformazione. L’uomo e le cose sono entrambi composti dai quattro elementi che entrano in contatto tra loro, da questa connessione deriva la conoscenza. Empedocles' philosophy is known for his cosmogonic theory of the four elements.
